CONTEXT
Between the 8th-11th of August 2023, the state of Hawaii, notably the city of Lahaina on the island of Maui, was devastated by 4 major wildfires, destroying 2,207 buildings and tragically killing over 100 people, making it the deadliest US wildfire in over a century and the 5th deadliest wildfire in US history.
Propagated by a combination of dry, gusty conditions created by an anticyclone north of Hawaii and the remnants of the Category 4 Hurricane Dora, the August 2023 wildfires were Hawaii’s second costliest natural catastrophe event on record, with a total economic loss of $5.5bn, and the 7th costliest wildfire of all time in terms of insured losses, which totalled $3.5bn.
