STORM BORIS

MIS RESPONSE TO THE MAJOR STORM THAT HAS WREAKED DEVASTATION ACROSS EUROPE

A DANGEROUS AND DEADLY EVENT

A deep low pressure area, subsequently named Storm Boris, led to significant rainfall and catastrophic flooding across parts of central and eastern Europe.

The worst storm to hit the continent in decades, Boris has caused over a month's worth of rainfall to come down in just one day.

The worst affected countries have been Austria, Poland, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia, Italy and Hungary, where there were multiple declarations of emergency and evacuations in the tens of thousands.

Tragically, Storm Boris has claimed the lives of at least 24 people so far.

Although much of the initial impact of Storm Boris has subsided, there are still areas across Europe dealing with dangerous water levels and the fallout from the major flooding.

THE MIS RESPONSE

On 16 September, the MIS team released a Flood Exposure and Claims Layer for Storm Boris on GEO.

The exposure layer highlights potentially flooded areas across Europe to demonstrate where flooding may have an impact upon relevant portfolios.

To provide further detail, the claims layer features estimated maximum flood depths, which shows the probable extent of the likely flood damage in the affected areas.

The team made updates to the event report on 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25 and 26 September with additions to the Flood Exposure and Claims Layer, covering more potentially affected locations and providing more refined flood depth estimates.
